Global Health Elective

RUHS EM residents have opportunities to travel abroad for global health outreach during their elective months. They gain clinical experience in acute care settings in austere environments. They learn about different health care systems, lack of resources, and poverty. They gain exposure to different pathologies including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, diarrheal diseases, vaccine-preventable diseases, malaria, and viral hemorrhagic fevers. In addition, they gain familiarity and appreciation for language and culture. Most importantly, they serve as educators for local health care staff in underdeveloped countries to promote sustainability.

Two EM residents spent a month in Ondo State, Nigeria in October, 2022. They provided lectures and didactics to over 500 health care workers. They taught CPR, ACLS, airway management, trauma life support, pediatric resuscitation, POCUS, and emergent procedures.

Three other EM residents spent a month in Maputo, Mozambique in March, 2023 and again in October, 2023. They worked side-by-side with Mozambican residents in their newly developed Emergency Department. They guided resuscitations and procedures on local patients and provided daily lectures to the Mozambican residency team.
